Returning to the long-standing dispute between those who advocate a strictly limited state that exists only to protect rights to life, liberty, and property and those who maintain that government must do more to help the poor — forced income redistribution and other policies — my Freeman colleague Sheldon Richman contends here that there is no virtue in coercion and if you’re really interested in helping the poor, the place to begin is by dismantling the many things government does that makes life harder for them.
