As I insinuated yesterday, I am no fan of allowing politics to supplant the scientific method. Another instance where this is happening is with the CTS scare. I am not going to take sides because I don’t have all the evidence. I’m not sure anybody else does, either. I’m just saying that the “evidence” of contamination did not convince me that chemicals from the laboratory were seeping into the groundwater any more than they convinced me than that somebody was tampering with the well water. Many times, incidences of cancer were cited. Usually, these would be considered anecdotal. Nobody ever compared the CTS site cancer rates to rates for other areas. Lastly, it was the politicians, not the lab technicians, saying action needed to be taken. I reiterate, this reminds me of a case study of flim-flam from my STS days in college.
