The editors of the Smoky Mountain News think the Sylva Police Department should get a new building. Fifteen officers will soon be crowded into a 1927 structure it describes as being as large as five to seven parking spaces. The station has only one restroom. Evidence is stored in three places, including a basement susceptible to flooding, and it will need a fourth place when items from a recent double homicide return from the state. The building was particularly crowded when the normal shift change occurred with 4-5 SBI agents, the DA, and 3-4 of his staff members using the building for the homicide investigation. The station does not have amenities common to modern stations such as an exercise room, a conference room, or an interview room. Chief David Woodward would like to move into the old Jackson County library. The town is proposing swapping the $157,560 former chamber of commerce building for the $796,000 former library. Town fathers hope presumed goodwill from previous years’ dollar rents of town properties to the county will make up the difference.
