Just when I was ready to give Cary officials a pass on their boneheaded tradition of calling the town Christmas tree a “community” tree, the Cary News publishes this story in which Mayor Harold Weinbrecht says this (emphasis is mine):
Weinbrecht said the scrutiny has been disappointing. He added that he looked forward to hearing all sides of the issue before voting. “I have no problem calling a tree a Christmas tree,” he said. “But we are proposing to change the name of a tradition, and I want to hear good reasons on why and how this will bring the community together.”
If this doesn’t illustrate how far down the road some will go to be perceived as “inclusive,” I don’t know what does.
The mayor might want to look at the home page of the town’s Web site, which declares this (emphasis is mine):
Town of Cary administrative offices will be closed on Thursday, December 24 and Friday December 25, 2009 in observance of Christmas. Garbage, recycling and yard waste collections will be collected one day earlier.
Mr. Mayor, it’s a Christmas tree.
Meantime, the Catholic League has declared the Cary “community tree” one its craziest Christmas stories of 2009.
