Since the passage of the Affordable Care Act, North Carolina and 35 other states left the monumental task for the federal government to set up their health insurance exchanges. It’s proven to be a smart move.

Health Care News reports that many of the 14 states with state-based exchanges (where federally approved health plans are sold to consumers in the individual market) are hurting. Now that federal start-up grants have been exhausted, these states are scrounging for ways to keep them in operation.
