For years now, Wake County parents who believe they should have more control over the education of their children who attend public school, have been thwarted by Wake’s school system. In today’s Daily Journal, Locke Foundation President John Hood offers perspective on why change is likely to come to the Wake system, now that the News & Observer has reported on Wake’s effort to make it as tough as possible for parents to transfer out of consistenly low-performing schools, as is their right via the federal No Child Left Behind law.

After reading Hood’s column and the N&O piece, reasonable people can conclude only one thing: Wake’s actions are clearly designed to protect the system and its control over parents and kids. While I agree that Wake’s policies should be turned on their head, I also believe parents must step up to the plate, even if doing so is tough. There are other educational options.

Disgruntled parents can learn something from Wake County: take control.
