Every now and then a seemingly inocuous story reveals the insidious waste of government bureaucracies, not to mention the nanny state mindset that dictates operations. The News & Observer reports on one of these stories today. (scroll to second item).

North Carolina, which is on the verge of imposing a roughly $1 billion tax hike on residents, has deemed a wellness coordinator to be “a very critical position.” Yes, in the minds of state bureaucrats, employing someone to tell state employees they should exercise more and eat fewer burgers and shakes is deemed a “very critical position.”

Thanks to the News & Observer for reporting on this ridiculous waste, and for noting that the bureaucrats slipped the “very critical” hiring into a slim window between freezes.

“This is a very critical position at an important time for the state, with budget cuts and potential reductions in the work force,” said Margaret Jordan, the office’s public information officer. “People are under a lot of high stress.”
