Forget all this political and philosophical stuff: the Mars Express, the European spacecraft that is orbiting Barsoom while the NASA probe is exploring the surface, has apparently confirmed the existence of water ice at the south pole. This in additional to the discovery of water vapor in the atmosphere, is obviously suggestive of at least the possibility of life, at least a long time ago.
BTW, the Mars Spirit is now transmitting data back to NASA again.
