Last week, flyers posted around the campus of Gonzaga University (most famous as giant-killers in the NCAA tournament) were ordered removed because they had a bad word in them — hate. The story is here.

The flyer was advertising a talk by Dan Flynn, author of the book Why the Left Hates America. Evidently, the Director of Student Activities hadn’t read it very carefully, because he told the YAF organizer that “hate is a strong word and students shouldn’t hold an event at which a speaker hates someone.” When informed that the speaker was not going to advocate hatred himself, but only explain why other people seem to hate the US, that didn’t make any difference. The flyers would have to be rewritten to satisfy the Sesame Street feelings of the administration.

And as usual, no action against those who tore down the flyers.
