Raleigh readers of the LR will know what I’m talking about ? in a city whose public art includes the $50-grand “Light + Time Tower” (it’s about the relationship between the sun and earth!) and the glorified cat dropping near the City Council. Readers of “The Emperor’s New Clothes” should be quick on the uptake also.

The State House in South Carolina had a local artist, Christian Thee, decorate the state’s Christmas Tree (does the ACLU know about this grave violation of South Carolinians’ rights?). The artist, known for “trompe l’oeil” works (literally, deceptive to the eye, such as painting a broken strand of pearls on the floor to trick the ladies), decorated the tree with CDs for their reflective quality. Reaction has been somewhat, er, uncultured:

? “It’s really sad. It’s really tacky.”
? “It’s sort of strange.”
? “I’ve never seen cd’s on a Christmas tree.”
? “Did the state do that or did someone do that as a joke?
? “It looks like someone did a poor prank on the state.”
