An article in the Washington Post considers whether simultaneously raising class sizes and teacher pay might improve student achievement.

It is an interesting idea, but I tend to side with Eric Hanushek on the matter. He says, “I would advocate letting class sizes creep up somewhat and using the released funds to go toward teacher salaries.” But, he said, it would be “a long, long time” before this produced more achievement if ineffective teachers got the raise, too.” Knowing how the teacher’s unions (and associations) work, I am sure that ineffective teachers would receive raises too.

I am glad to see that someone is willing to offer an alternative view of class size. I like to think that my Spotlight on class size had something to do with it. Then again, I am married to a realist.
