This headstone, about to get gobbled up completely by this tree, is on farm property that belongs to my sister-in-law’s family in Virginia near Appomattox. The only name showing right now is “LOCKE,” but old-timers tell me “J. LOCKE” was visible until a few years ago. He was a former union soldier, and the story goes that some Confederate widows would marry Yankee soldiers for their pensions, which this man’s wife did. No way to know if he was distantly related to THE John Locke.
