The Jackson County Board of Commissioners got awarded for their conservation efforts this past year in the county.  According to the Sylva Herald:

Commissioners were honored for their 4-1 decision to impose a
five-month moratorium on subdivision and steep-slope development in
March of last year, which halted development while officials developed
ordinances regulating those areas.

In bestowing the award, Governor?s
Conservation Achievement Awards Program Chairman Edwards Nickens said
the commissioners ?showed great courage.?

?Under
great pressure, the county commission showed great prudence and vision
by fighting for a sweeping view of the future it wishes to leave to its
children,? he said. ?This kind of forward-thinking gives hope to
surrounding communities that also are struggling against a tsunami of
cement
.?

Wow, a tsunami of cement is taking over, and it seems a loss of property rights was the answer.
