Good intentions can be counterproductive. Years ago, a transit director told me off the record he hoped his employer wouldn’t use another public survey in its next transit plan because people always show up and want to say the right thing with good intentions. The result was an overbuilt transit service, a.k.a. big buses running around empty, when it would have been greener to right-size.

So now, the City of Asheville wants everybody to know that it will be counting peds and cyclists next Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday between 5:00 and 7:00 p.m. I doubt it is to encourage the seven or eight remaining auto enthusiasts to stay off their feet to protest. I also noticed the DOT has mowed some of the neck-high roadside weeds.
