In today’s Pope Center piece, Jane Shaw takes a look at the Wainstein report on the athletic/academic scandal at UNC. She takes a look at the findings, but also considers the bigger question: Will the university take the measures necessary to prevent any repetition of the academic scams that helped top athletes remain eligible to play?

Chancellor Folt’s statement “I actually believe that academics and athletics can coexist” is undoubtedly true. The problem, of course, is that it is very hard to maintain academic integrity and at the same time field winning football and basketball teams. Without vigilant oversight from the chancellor, it may not be many years before the athletic tail is again wagging the academic dog.
