That’s the scuttlebutt as CBS Radio re-jiggers its national footprint of stations. Stay with me, this is dense.

Up in Boston CBS killed off WBCN-FM, a long-time rock staple in the town, as part of a refit in that market. But in order to make sure some other Boston area-station did not poach the familiar call letters, CBS transferred the WBCN brand to what was WFNA-AM in Charlotte. That CBS property at 1660AM has been simulcasting WFNZ (610AM) sports-talk programming for as long as I can remember.

So, as of right now, it is still a WFNZ-WBCN simulcast. Ah, but perhaps not for long. Word is that WBCN will put Jason Lewis’ syndicated show on air starting on September 14th. Now, would that be live 6-9pm or later? Well, the Charlotte Knights last game of the season is Monday night, opening a void in 1660AM’s sked starting at 7pm.

Should Lewis pop up on WBCN, it would immediately suggest several very interesting questions for the Charlotte radio landscape.

Is this a test-drive move, or a permanent re-purposing of WBCN away from sports and into talk? Making the change as we head into the fall sports season suggests that 1660AM carrying live sports at night will be rare, if not phased out. Do the Knights need to find a new broadcast partner for next season? Will the station add other syndicated programming to its day and move away from the simulcast mode?

As ever, money will determine the course of events. If more advertisers are out there for a syndicated talk station than a simulcast sports station, that is what WBCN will be.

Update: Dropped in to hear the 1660 is now rolling ESPN Radio past morning drive. Something would seem to be up.
