District Court Judge Catherine Eagles says the John Edwards trial is ready to move forward, with Edwards’ health issues reportedly under control. Jury selection is set to begin April 12. Edwards faces the justice system over allegations that he violated campaign finance law by receiving cash from wealthy donors to keep then-mistress Rielle Hunter hidden from the public as he was running for president. The prosecution contends the money amounted to campaign contributions because Edwards would not have entered into the arrangement if not for wanting to shield his presidential run from a knock-out punch. I continue to wonder if this will really go to trial, and I have serious doubts about the prosecution’s argument. While I find Edwards’ behavior despicable and alarming — his ability to look a camera in the eye and lie like a rug makes the hair stand up on my arms — I question whether it is criminal.
