In yesterday’s Wall Street Journal, John Edwards was given space to outline his big campaign theme of attacking “special interests.” Today’s Journal has this editorial (with a link to Edwards’ piece) that puts all of Edwards’ cant into perspective: “If you’re a business that creates wealth, you’re a special interest. If you redistribute that wealth, you’re not.”

The redistributionists the Journal has in mind are the trial lawyers, who often rake in prodigious amounts of money in cases where harm to anyone is hard to find. That’s how Edwards made the money to afford his 20,000 square foot house. He and his ilk want people to think that their enemies are the businesses that produce goods and services and their saviors are the lawyers and politicians. Sorry, Mr. Edwards, but even the most overpaid CEO can do nothing to me, whereas politicians and lawyers can take away my liberty and property.
