The Uptown paper of record today does its best to portray John Mobley as an innocent victim of an unjustified shooting. There is something very selective at work here.

Recall that Mobley was shot and killed over the weekend when Lonnie Kirkley caught Mobley breaking into his minivan in Kirkley’s driveway. The Union County DA is now deciding whether to file any charges against Kirkley.

Although we are told Mobley had two theft convictions, Observer reporter Emily S. Achenbaum, or perhaps some editor, opted not to include how many times Mobley had been arrested. Five? 10? 15? That is very selective reporting.

Besides, the only thing relevant to the DA’s decision on whether to file charges has nothing to do with Mobley’s relative threat status, but whether Kirkley felt he had to defend himself and his family with deadly force.
