N&R columnist Lorraine Ahearn weighs in on the Marxavi Angel Martinez case, dishing out some choice words for Alamance County Sheriff Terry Johnson:

We can all sleep tonight, thanks to the diligence of Alamance County Sheriff Terry Johnson.

That’s because even as we speak, 23-year-old Marxavi Angel Martinez is locked up in a Charlotte holding cell, to be arraigned Monday on charges of aggravated identity theft.

….The problem, in a nutshell, is that the rule of law is the rule of law. So, what happens when law enforcement doesn’t follow those rules? The arrests that result could conceivably turn out to be — much as we hate to use this word — “illegal.”

As we’ll see, the Martinez matter isn’t the only burr under the saddle for Johnson’s posse, a particularly aggressive version of local law enforcement deputized with the federal power of “ICE” — U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement.

Ahearn goes on to discuss how Hispanics in Alamance County are routinely arrested for minor traffic offenses, something that is “unheard of” for non-Hispanics. That’s because the citizenship status of non-Hispanics more often than not isn’t in question. Ahearn, well-known for her activism with the immigrant community here in Greensboro, is giving the impression that Hispanics are being rounded up at random.

As the N&R pointed out on Saturday, we just need to figure out what the immigration law in this country is going to be as illegals continue to flow over the border. Remember an attempt at reform was made last year, supported by those world-class idiots Bush and McCain.
