Winston-Salem Mayor Allen Joines announces he will run for a third term. Somehow I missed the fact that he was on Gov.-elect Bev Perdue’s short list for Secretary of Commerce.

Perdue praised Joines:

“He understands economic development inside and out,” Perdue said. “His experience, knowledge and integrity would be an extremely valuable asset to my administration and the Department of Commerce. However, I understand and appreciate his commitment to the city and the people of Winston-Salem.”

I think it’s fair to note, however, that Winston-Salem isn’t exactly going gangbusters right now, with even the city’s crown jewel for economic development — the taxpayer-funded downtown stadium —- running into some trouble.

Then again, most cities aren’t going gangbusters, which is why they’re waiting for the feds to bail them out, including $1.1 billion for “projects involving sidewalks.”

Update: Little surprise that Gov. Mike Easley is standing in line with his hand out. Funny that the Uptown paper of record characterizes this as Easley having his “ducks in a row.” If that were the case, then he wouldn’t be standing in line, would he?
