H119– a bill to amend environmental laws in 2011 —-has been filed.

According to an (unposted) report in today’s N&R, the bill gives the City of Greensboro more time to perform upgrades to its sewage treatment plant as dictated by the Jordan Lake Rules. Under the original rules, Greensboro would have to perform the upgrades by 2016; the bill gives G’boro until 2020.

City water resources director Allan Williams said “not sure whether, technically, it’s going to do us any good.”

That’s because Mayor Bill Knight said at the N.C. Metropolitan Mayors Conference that upgrades to Greensboro’s treatment plant would run as high as $800 million-$1 billion. It’s a considerable cost (understatement of the year) whether it takes place in 2016 or 2020. But I guess a little breathing room can only be welcome.
