Josephus Daniels helped modernize the newspaper industry, led a white supremacist movement, oversaw the American navy in wartime, and launched the Washington career of Franklin D. Roosevelt.

N.C. State professor and Daniels biographer Lee Craig discussed each of these achievements — good and bad — during a presentation today to the John Locke Foundation’s Shaftesbury Society. In the video clip below, Craig discusses Daniels’ impact as U.S. navy secretary.
