SHANNON – Mary Jones got mad when two pit bulls belonging to a neighbor killed 177 of her chickens. Then she got even, shooting one of the dogs to death and beating the other to death with a metal pipe.
“I saw the bull dog in the pen killing them, tearing them up,” said Jones, who lives on Cuz Road. “He done a number to those chickens. So I shot him twice with my pistol. He probably would’ve done me just like he done them if I had tried to stop him.
“I found another one in the pen gettin’ more of my chickens so I just picked me up a pipe, and I beat the breath out of him.?
Jones said she beat the second one to death rather than shooting it because it was smaller than the other dog. She said the dogs, which belonged to a neighbor, got into the pen on Wednesday and killed $970 worth of chickens. She was able to save 65 chickens.
Mary Jones said it appeared the dogs didn’t kill the chickens for food, but for pleasure.
