OK, this Winston-Salem Journal editorial, which I just now found this morning, is dated July 6. I kept a pretty close eye on the Journal’s editorial page and criticized them for not editorializing on Jesse Helms. I assume the editorial was in the print edition and was delayed in making it online, for some reason. If I missed something, let me know.
At any rate, the Journal writes:
It’s no secret that little love was lost between Helms and most of the state’s newspaper editorial pages. This page and others viewed “Senator No” as an impediment to North Carolina’s building a better future rather than trying to live in a past that is gone.
There can be do doubt, however, that Jesse Helms loved North Carolina and the United States and served them with a great deal of passion and skill, doing what he thought was right. He made his mark.
