If this is a sign ordinance that is overly favorable to business, as Winston-Salem/Forsyth planning board member Lynne Mitchell says, then I’d hate to see one that is unfavorable:

Speakers representing various businesses, including Goodwill Industries, Windsor Jewelers and WilcoHess, said that the new ordinance would be too costly for businesses.

Steve Williams with WilcoHess said that it could cost almost $300,000 to replace all of the company’s signs in the county.

David Powell said in a letter to the board that it would cost about $7,500 to replace his sign at David’s Cleaners.

“It’s got to come from somewhere,” said Ken Fleming, with the Winston-Salem Chamber of Commerce. “It’s not everyone that has $20,000 laying around to replace a sign.”

Mitchell added she felt as if she were “selling her soul” by voting for the ordinance. A little melodramatic if you ask me. We are only talking about signs, here. Maybe I’m weird, but I’m the kind of person that’s just never been offended by their mere existence.
