The Independent is beside itself over a story it headlined “Thatcher reveals her doubts over basis for Iraq war.” The headline made for a link on the Drudge Report, guaranteeing that this tidbit will get wide circulation.
But click on the link and you find that Lady Thatcher’s comments are a bit more ambiguous than the headline suggests. You also find out that the person who interviewed her was Tina Brown, darling of the lefty salons in Manhattan and former editor of The New Yorker and now a style columnist for The Washington Post.
Add to this that Thatcher has been a staunch supporter of President Bush and the Iraq war and this has all the earmarks of one of those stories that will be soon be “clarified,” but not before The Independent‘s headline is in the Bush-haters’ sack of tools to use against him and the war effort.
