Mayor Terry Bellamy wanted to clear the air tonight. Evidently, people had been speaking disparagingly about the $236,250 economic development incentive Asheville awarded to Unison Engine Components, formerly Smith’s Aerospace, on September 23. Economic Development Director Sam Powers explained that the city had a contract with Unison, and the incentives were contingent upon Unison meeting performance goals in terms of capital improvements and employment. To further redeem the accused policy, Powers said the city’s economic development incentive policy mirrored that of the state.
