The fate of New Orleans has already attained mythic status, people can look at it and see exactly what they want to see. But state and local officials across the nation must look at Katrina and realize that they are responsible for the safety of their communities before, during, and for some days after a disaster strikes.
Officials in Louisiana simply assumed that the feds would come “save” them, somehow (with what, a time machine?) and that mindset gave them license to ignore the facts. Facts like riots in the Superdome seven years ago during Hurricane George.
Enough.
