Garrison Keillor has always made my skin crawl. That lilting, dreamy, cloying voice just doesn’t to it for me. I saw him once in Northgate Mall wearing a striped muffler and rummaging through a sales table. After reading this account of his recent visit to Dallas I wonder what was going through his mind as he mingled with the benighted citizenry of the Bull City lo those years ago. God, it must have been painful. However, I don’t recall that he did to us what he did to Dallas, minding his manners when he was there but ripping it and Texas a new one in a column once he was back in Minnesota or wherever it is he lives. An example:

I got some insight last week into who supports torture when I went down to Dallas to speak at Highland Park Methodist Church. It was spooky.

I walked in, was met by two burly security men … and within 10 minutes was told by three people that this was the Bushes’ church and that it would be better if I didn’t talk about politics.

Those who were there say the security was demanded by his publisher and that Keillor never spoke to anyone before taking the stage. So, not only did he stab Dallas in the back, it looks like he made things up in doing so.
