….for Winston-Salem’s taxpayer-funded downtown baseball stadium. Last month it was the shotgun house. This month it’s the cottages for homeless veterans:

A one-room cottage helped restart Peter Moorman’s life.

After years of alcohol abuse and periods of homelessness, Moorman moved into the Kay Vives Cottages several years ago.

Moorman, a Vietnam veteran, is one of 75 homeless veterans who have called the cottages on Green and Watkins streets home since 1999.

But this summer, the nonprofit organization that owns the five cottages, Experiment in Self-Reliance, sold them to Brookstown Development Partners LLC to make room for the new baseball-stadium complex.

They will soon be replaced either by temporary parking spaces or by the mixed-use development planned for the site, said Joe Bellissimo, the ballpark’s project manager.
