I have been told that North Carolina’s public schools have no business contracting with for-profit companies because nobody should make a profit from educating kids.  Specifically, two non-profit boards have indicated that they will apply for a charter from the State Board of Education.  One plans to contract with for-profit online education company K12 (NYSE: LRN).  The other would employ Connections Academy, which is owned by mega-publisher Pearson PLC (NYSE: PSO), for their online education services.

But there is nothing new about the state entering into contracts with for-profit companies that deliver educational services.  Recently, for example, the State Board of Education approved the use of state funds for a $7.2 million contract with for-profit technology company Wireless Generation.  For those who do not know, Wireless Generation is owned by News Corp, which also owns Fox News Channel and the Wall Street Journal.

One would think that liberals would shriek at the latter much more than the former.  Yep, one would think…
