The Greensboro Human Relations Commission will ask the City Council to issue a statement of regret over the Nov. 4, 1979 Klan-Nazi shootout.

The commission will also recommend “council members acknowledge the importance of the shootings and pledge to ensure that nothing like the events of Nov. 3, 1979, ever occur again in our community.”

Seems to me that’s pledge no one can keep.

Bonus observation: Just a brief riff on the definition of ‘ensure.’ I remember watching an interview with G. Gordon Liddy describing his assignment to ensure that Jack Anderson not write another article on Watergate. Liddy reasoned that if he broke Anderson’s legs, he could still sit at his typewriter; if he broke Anderson’s arms, he could still dictate an article; if he beat Anderson into a comatose state, he could come out of it and write another article.

So, Liddy reasoned, the only way to ensure that Anderson not write another article was to kill him.
