The Burlington-Alamance Board of Education will request a 13.4 percent increase in funding from county commissioners.

County Commissioner Bill Lashley doesn’t think much of the board’s request:

…Lashley called the Alamance-Burlington School System’s likely funding request “basically ridiculous” Tuesday during a meeting of the county commissioners and school board.

Lashley made his comments during a discussion of items being considered as part of the budget proposal the school system is expected to submit to the county in late April.

“The taxpayers aren’t made of money,” Lashley said, estimating a 5-cent per $100 property tax increase would be required if the county approved all the spending increases the school system is considering for 2008-09.
