The following appeared in the Asheville Tribune:

Economic arguments indicate the stimulus bill will do more harm than good. It would increase the $10.7 trillion federal deficit over 10% after interest is added. An $800,000,000,000 economy would be the fifteenth largest in the world, and all currency in the US does not even total $800,000,000,000. President Obama proposed creating 3,675,000 jobs with $800,000,000,000. That’s $218,000 per job. Government will have to obtain the funds by taxing, borrowing with principal and interest due, or printing and deflating the dollar. In other words, the money will have to come out of the economy, perhaps eliminating private-sector jobs, for government to put it in.

The president says infrastructure programs must be undertaken urgently to reverse the economic downturn. Only $7 billion from the plan will go toward infrastructure in the first year. If deficit spending worked, President Bush should have made the nation prosperous. The increased revenues and programs would grow government at the expense of private enterprise. The ugly effects of remote-government-control of the economy and bestowal of government privilege are supported by individual aspirations to net more than fair trade would yield, and mitigated by survival instinct’s propensity for finding creative workarounds.
