As far as school systems go, the Winston-Salem/Forsyth County system appears to run pretty smoothly. So we here in Guilford County will have to excuse the Journal for being a bit naive on the subject of city/county school mergers:

But there are good reasons that the state is pushing its last holdouts – including Davidson and Surry – toward school merger.

Although consolidation comes with plenty of bumps, the benefits are usually worth the trouble, at least in this state. Money saved on maintenance, purchasing and other areas can go to classrooms and teachers.

Merged systems have more clout with the bureaucrats who push merger. And merged systems, without having separate administrations, are more efficient.

Anyone who’s kept an eye on public schools over the years should know there’s no such thing as money saved.
