• Successor chosen. Retiring state Rep. Shirley Randleman, R-Wilkes, has been selected to take the late Sen. Don East’s seat in the state Senate if East wins the election. East passed away recently following complications from surgery.

 

Straight ticket, almost. Once again, North Carolina’s unique system of straight-ticket voting that does not include the presidential candidates, can cause confusion for voters. The system, imposed in 2000 when Democrats were in charge and Republicans were winning presidential elections regularly, is the only one like it in the nation.

 

Who’s your rep? Redistricting divided the tiny campus of Swannanoa’s Warren Wilson College into two state House districts.

 

Bipartisan support. Former state Supreme Court Justice and Republican candidate for governor Bob Orr recorded a robocall for Democratic Superintendent of Public Instruction June Atkinson.

 

Comic relief. And, just to lighten things a bit, here’s the election night special from Monty Python’s Flying Circus. The Very Silly Party candidate did not split the Silly Party vote after all.
