Hagan calls for a 100,000 increase in U.S. military personnel, calling the current ranks overstretched. The Wall Street Journal profiles the Dole-Hagan contest, reporting that Democrats have sought to convert Dole’s national stature into a liability. The Palin effect is boosting the prospects of GOP candidates in the South, including Dole in NC, reports the newsletter Southern Political Report.

? Five recent polls on the governor’s race are all over the map. Perdue’s internal poll has her 6 six points up. PPP and Civitas call it a one-point Perdue edge. Survey USA and Research 2000 give McCrory eight and five point leads, respectively. Four of the five also provide Senate numbers, with PPP showing a one-point Hagan edge, Perdue’s internal a two-point Dole edge, Research 2000 a six-point Dole lead, and SUSA an eight-point Dole lead.
