Greensboro City Council member Danny Thompson called the N&R to defend legal fees the city will incur as it defends itself against a lawsuit brought by residents near the White Street landfill:

Thompson points out that the consultant costs “pale in comparison” to the savings the city taxpayers will see from using White Street. He estimated that the city could save $50 to $60 million using the current, permitted space at White Street — some of which he suggested be invested in a new, regional landfill.

As for the legal costs, “Whether you are Walmart or a city, you can’t prevent somebody from bringing some lawsuit against you. Regardless of if it has base or not you still have to defend it. There is a cost to that,” he said.

Yeah, the state of North Carolina will find that out soon enough —Planned Parenthood has filed suit “to invalidate part of the new state budget that cuts it off from federal or state funds for family planning.”

It’s the same liberal perversion of the First Amendment that believes free speech is dependent upon gov’t funding.

Update: Just read Thompson in the Rhino saying the “future is in partnering with other counties and siting a regional landfill.” Interesting because that’s what fellow council member and landfill opponent Robbie Perkins has been pushing.
