Live from the Legislature

The smoking ban bill was removed from today’s Judiciary 1 committee. Apparently, the votes to amend the bill to broaden the exceptions have not materialized.

In other news, House Democrats held a press conference announcing a special committee to look at solutions for NC’s dropout rate. Speaker Hackney (D-Orange) has asked that some of the education budget be dedicated to this. They will hold at least two public hearings in late April, early March, to hear ideas from “the best and brightest” minds in education to come up with new ways to address this problem.

Ironically, Sen. Harry Brown (R – Onslow) held a press conference at 9:30, announcing his bill to create three regional vocational high schools (modeled on a successful program currently operating in Gaston County). These schools are designed to prevent dropouts and train students in highly employable trades.

There are some good ideas out there.
