Michael, I treated my census taker the same way you did. He wasn’t happy. All this talk of the decennial national headcount reminded me of a routine Lenny Bruce used to do called “Census Takers.” I first read the bit in The Essential Lenny Bruce. It’s about a white census taker in Harlem whose methodology is to find children and ask, “Hey, kid! How many people live on this block?” Notice he was only interested in numbers, not race. See how much progress we’ve made?

UPDATE: Stumbled on this just now. It’s Lenny Bruce discussing the free-market system. I kid you not.
