The Pope Center has routinely written and argued that higher education has been oversold to the public.

Now, the Pope Center has some support, at least comedic, from an unlikely source – David Letterman.

During a recent segment on the “Late Show” entitled “What’s in Your Ipod?,” Letterman had a conversation with the contestant, Jessica, about her plans for after college. What transpired was a comical look at how some students don’t belong in higher education and how many courses offered today offer little intellectually.

The video of the segment is included, but the relevant part of the video is from 1:41 to 2:37.

Here is part of the conversation:

Letterman: You come to New York City a lot?
Jessica: Uh, no. I’ve only been three times in my life.
Letterman: It’s all happening here isn’t it?
Jessica: Yeah.
Letterman: Would you like to live here?
Jessica: Yea, I think for a couple of years I think I would.
Letterman: Yeah, yeah. What would you do here do you think? What do you do for a living now?
Jessica: I’m a student at the University of Virginia.
Letterman: Uh huh.
Jessica: I’m a double major in sociology and women’s studies.
Letterman: Oh. And what was the second one?
Jessica: Women’s studies.
Letterman: Women’s studies? So what will you do with that degree?
Jessica: I have no idea.
Audience laughter
Letterman: Yeah, you took the words right out of my mouth.
