The Lexington Dispatch says the city’s Board of Education should open up its search for a new superintendent:
A selection process conducted in secret could simply reinforce some of these negative perceptions. Should an issue with the new hire arise at a later time, then the board could face strong criticism for its selection. However, an open process would allow the public to judge the candidates’ qualifications for themselves and comment on the finalists.
Other school systems across the state have conducted their process in a more open manner, including Guilford County and Charlotte-Mecklenburg schools in recent months. Those are two of the largest systems in the state. If they can name their finalists, then certainly Lexington City Schools can do the same, even as other small systems have done.
Guilford County conducted its search in an open manner? Really? Let’s see, Mo Green was announced, “vetted” by the public and hired in what, three days? Give me a break on that one.
More interesting is the fact that Lexington’s school board is appointed by the City Council, not elected. At least we don’t have that situation here.
More: Mo starts work Monday morning.
