The Raleigh N&O version of Bush’s visit:
Some supporters stood or sat for hours in the 95-degree heat to watch the president’s 24-vehicle motorcade. Many held American flags or hand-made signs backing Bush. One said, “God bless W!” Another said, “Flush the Johns.”
Gathered in one spot along the motorcade route were about 100 protesters calling for Bush’s defeat. Many held newly printed Kerry-Edwards signs. Some of the protesters live in Raleigh, and others traveled from other cities to show their disdain. “Bush has just got to go,” said Ann Thompson, 61, who drove from Rougemont to Raleigh.
The protesters weren’t very welcome in the Republican-leaning neighborhoods.
Several Bush supporters infiltrated the protesters’ group. One held a sign that said: “Ignore These Fools. Vote Bush.” A few car passengers gave the protesters thumbs-up, but more yelled obscenities or stuck their middle finger out the window.
