Jon, I general use the information in the CIA Factbook

Life expectancy in the U.S. is fairly high (women outlive men by about six years on average, which is typical in middle and high income countries) but not that near the top. Medical care is only one factor that influences life expectancy, lifestyle issues are also very important… diet, exercise, smoking, drinking, sun exposure etc. all matter. I saw an article awhile back that said that immigrants to the U.S. outlive on average native-borm Armericans despite being on average poorer and seeing a doctor less frequently… seems they don’t have as many of the bad habits of those born here.

Also note the low life expectancies in Sub-Saharan Africa and the HIV infection rates. It is a huge crisis that deserves much more attention than it’s getting.
