Kudos go out today to the Jackson County Board of Commissioners for failing to loan $700,000 to the Great Smoky Mountains Railroad, while question marks go out to Swain County’s commissioners for picking up the deal. Funding recreational rail is such a weird role for even multipurpose government. That is probably why it is funded off tourist taxes collected from people who do not vote in local elections.
