I did not think we’d get a quarter-cent sales tax placed on the ballot for November, but I at least thought Mecklenburg County commissioner George Dunlap would get a second to talk about the idea. He didn’t. And with that I think we can forget about any kind of frank talk about the county’s fiscal condition between now and November.

Jennifer Roberts and her Democratic majority are going to duck the issue if allowed to, pinning their hopes on the property tax reval now underway to save them from years of wild spending. Under no circumstances will they allow themselves to be seen as “chosing” higher taxes as a way out, but post-election should they be “forced” to accept a reval which wallops county homeowners — well, there is two years to work that off.

Besides, in 2012 the Messiah will be back on the ballot and Dem turnout ginned up. And now you know why George didn’t get a second.
