jjWhat is South Carolina doing? Passing an actual tough, seemingly enforceable immigration bill. Don’t they know that the world will come to an end?

It might. At least the world were immigration status has no bearing on employment. We’ll see if in the fall of 2010 South Carolina farms cannot find workers to bring in crops or Grand Strand motels cannot find cleaning help. At least not without paying much higher wages, costs that would then be passed onto consumers. Or maybe the law will just ramp up the sophistication of forged documents. All are logical negative consequences of the stricter law.

But that is how federalism works. States try things and see what works — or doesn’t. North Carolina has certainly taken a different path, with its own obvious negative impacts. Should the new law in Palmetto state prove effective, expect a flood of refugees from South of the Border.

Maybe we could then call in the UN.
