As Brunswick County looks to provide affordable housing for county workers Squall Lines’ Paul Messino analyzes what happens when government messes with the housing market, which is what could happen here in Greensboro if some people had their way, depending on exactly what type of product the city would churn out.

After HCD head Andy Scott spoke briefly about a proposed $1 million housing bond, City Council member Mike Barber voiced his opposition, citing the routine rejection of private development but the large number of foreclosures here in Greensboro. Scott mentioned the growing rental market, which tells me ‘apartments.’ I can’t honestly say the council’s against apartments, considering the ‘City Council specials’ they hand out to developers like Roy Carroll. So where does the majority of protest come from? The general public, that’s who. Yet I wonder if the public will have a different view if such development if it’s part of a government project, especially with Barack Obama at the top of the ticket.

Remember the May 6 primary. The same people who thought there wasn’t enough money for schools probably think government should provide affordable housing.
