State Rep. Harris Blake, R-Harnett, filed a bill on May 21 that would substitute “state” for “education” in the lottery’s official title. The text of the bill says:

The name of the lottery shall be the “North Carolina State Lottery”, and all marketing, advertising, and other documents of the lottery shall bear that name. The North Carolina State Lottery Commission may exhaust any documents and printed materials with any other name without discarding them based on the name established by this section, but all new materials, publications, and advertising shall bear the new name.”

In related news, lottery employees are expected to get a hefty five percent pay increase, far above the amount of raises for other state employees. Lottery executive director Tom Shaheen’s thoughts on that to the N&O: “They can come apply for jobs at the lottery if they think we’re getting more than them.”
